Brief History

The Department of Education has a rich and evolving history that reflects its commitment to academic excellence, pedagogical innovation, and student success. Established in 1993, the department began by offering a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Education as a pass course, aimed at providing students with foundational knowledge in education theory and practice. At the outset, the department operated with only two faculty members, but their dedication and hard work laid the groundwork for what would become a thriving academic environment. Their relentless efforts not only shaped the department but also nurtured its growth, setting the stage for significant advancements in the years to come. Expansion and Academic Milestones In 2003, recognizing the growing demand for specialized knowledge in the field of education, the department expanded its offerings by introducing the Honours programme in the B.A. in Education. This marked a pivotal moment in the department’s history, as it began attracting students who were deeply committed to pursuing higher education and careers in the field. The introduction of the honours programme allowed the department to deepen its curriculum, focus more on research, and produce graduates with a stronger understanding of educational theories and pedagogies. The department reached another major milestone in 2019, with the launch of the Master of Arts (M.A.) in Education programme. This was a significant step forward, further solidifying the department’s role as a leader in educational studies. The M.A. programme brought advanced studies in education, offering students a platform to engage with complex educational research, policy analysis, and innovative teaching methodologies. This addition expanded the department's academic horizons and its capacity to produce highly qualified professionals ready to contribute to educational leadership and reform. Growth in Faculty and Expertise From its humble beginnings with just two faculty members, the Department of Education has grown steadily. Today, the department boasts a team of seven highly qualified faculty members, each with a strong academic background, in-depth knowledge, and diverse pedagogical skills. These faculty members bring a wealth of expertise in various fields, ranging from educational psychology, curriculum development, and policy studies to instructional technologies and classroom management. Their collective contributions have helped shape the department into a vibrant academic community known for its commitment to both teaching excellence and cutting-edge research. The department’s faculty members are not just educators but also mentors who play an instrumental role in guiding students toward academic and professional success. Their scholarly work, dedication to student engagement, and innovative teaching approaches continue to push the department forward. Success of Alumni and Increasing Student Achievement One of the key markers of the department’s success is its distinguished alumni. Over the years, many graduates have gone on to establish themselves in prominent positions across various sectors, including academia, educational administration, government, and non-profit organizations. The success of the department’s alumni is a testament to the quality of education they received, as well as the department’s focus on fostering intellectual growth and practical skills. In addition to the achievements of its alumni, the department has also witnessed a steady increase in student success rates. This is due in part to the continuous enhancement of resources available to both students and faculty, including access to modern educational technologies, an updated curriculum, and a well-equipped department library. As a result, students have consistently performed well academically, which has contributed to the department’s growing reputation for excellence in education. A Vision for the Future As the Department of Education looks to the future, it remains committed to its core mission of providing high-quality education that prepares students for leadership roles in the educational sector. With a strong and growing faculty, a history of academic innovation, and a community of successful alumni, the department is well-positioned to continue its legacy of excellence in education for many years to come.
