Brief History

The Department of Economics was set up in 1991, initially teaching economics as a pass in the Arts stream and compulsory in the Commerce stream. Later an Honours teaching facility in economics was started in 1996, and analytical and applied Economics at the postgraduate level was started in 2017. Not surprisingly, the discipline of Economics emerged to understand the changes happening in the 18th Century Western Society following the Industrial Revolution, as explained in the seminal writings of Adam Smith in his book, The Wealth of Nations. This department was nurtured by eminent professors which makes excellent economists for the future.A study of economics makes a person an informed and rational citizen.
